***Before air-conditioning. When we moved into our homestead we brought our wooden ice chest with us.  Every day a horse drawn wagon came down our street. When it stopped, we took a look. A dirty tarpaulin covered the ice inside. The ice monger was expert at cutting a block, gripping with ice tongs and carrying it into our kitchen. The chest was attractive, with beautiful hinges &  tight handles. A big pail went underneath to catch the water as the ice melted. We checked it before it overflowed onto the floor.

  Summer was pleasant. My folks had storm windows installed, with glass and screens. We switched their positions as the seasons changed. The windows had shades, curtains and draperies.The basement was deep, the floors cool.    My…

Sometimes, school was not an issue, but forced confinement was! It was summer when all 4 of us came down with scarlet fever! Visiting nurses nailed a quarantine sign on our front door. Seeing it was too much for my mother to cope with, ordered my brothers hospitalized..My sister miraculously had it for one day, and her symptoms disappeared! I was the only patient at home.  My friends would visit me through the three open dining room windows. There were pocket doors on two sides of the room with ropes tied across  so only visiting nurses, the doctor and my mother were allowed in. The South Loop has so much to offer all year long however, in my opinion, it is at its best during the Summer. There is so much to do and see and with the warm days and gentle lake breezes it just seems so inviting to get out, walk around and soak in all that the area offers.

Whether you want to take a stroll along the lake shore, watch the boats come and go from Monroe Harbor, relax in Grant Park, enjoy nature on Northerly Island or marvel at the impressive wall murals as you walk the Wabash Arts Corridor it’s all a short walk away. If you prefer to soak in some culture, you can visit Museum Campus where you will find the world class Shed Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum of Natural History.
