About Lincoln Park

In 1836, land from North Avenue to Fullerton, and from Lake Michigan to Halsted was inexpensive costing about $150 per acre. Because Lincoln Park was considered remote, nothing but a smallpox hospital and cemetery were located in the neighborhood until the 1860's.

Chicago was incorporated as a City in 1837 and North Avenue was established as Chicago's northern boundary. Chicago's North Side neighborhood, including Lincoln Park, was eventually incorporated as Lake View Township. The township was annexed to Chicago in 1889. In 1874, Lincoln Park Zoo was opened.

During the Great Depression, several Lincoln Park buildings fell into disrepair. The Lincoln Park Conservation Association was founded in 1954 to prevent deterioration of housing in Lincoln Park. By 1956, Lincoln Park received urban renewal funds to restore old buildings and schools in the neighborhood.

Today, the neighborhood is primarily made up of young urban professionals, young families, and recent college graduates. Lincoln Park is home to several upscale national retailers, bookstores, boutiques, coffee shops, bars and restaurants.
