Roscoe Village

Developers bought the land in Roscoe Village towards the end of the 19th Century, just west of Western Avenue to construct the world's largest amusement park - Riverview Park. Riverview opened its gates in 1903. Meanwhile, dozens of businesses were built along Belmont, Roscoe and Western, serving the needs of thousands of visitors who visited Riverview Park each year. Half of the businesses that sprang up were bars and taverns. Dozens of park workers ended up moving into Roscoe Village and built homes.

Several factors contributed to the decline of Roscoe Village in the late 1920's and early 30's including the Great Depression - The unemployment rate in Roscoe Village alone was over 40 percent. After World War II, the soldiers returning from the war no longer desired to live in Roscoe Village. The new expressway system and the GI Home Loan Program made it possible for residents to move to the suburbs. A number of garage fires in the late 70's inspired residents to form a block club to protect the neighborhood and keep teenagers off of the streets. 

In the late 80's and early 90's, Illinois residents began rediscovering the housing stock and convenient location of Roscoe Village. The neighborhood started attracting residents who bought two flats in Roscoe Village specifically to fix them, restore the units to their original glory and live in them. 

In 1986, Roscoe Village kicked off its first Roscoe Street Summer Festival. The festival was produced entirely by volunteers and brought attention to Roscoe Village. Soon, the summer festival changed its name to Retro on Roscoe, hired a producer, and soon turned the event into a major fundraiser. Proceeds from the festival finance Roscoe Village's programs including aid to local schools, Halloween Parade and Party, Winter Celebrations, and much more.
